Part 1
A generation unto the generations

There be a cause/ Because the cause is in the Anointing
Isa 61:1-6
Isaiah 61

61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to

A five fold purpose for the anointing
· preach good tidings unto the meek;
· he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
· to proclaim liberty to the captives,
· and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
· verse 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

NOTE: When Jesus quoted this verse of scripture he stopped at the favorable year of the Lord for had he gone on the end of the world would have taken place.

A six fold effect of the anointing
Verse 3
· To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion,
· to give unto them beauty for ashes,
· the oil of joy for mourning,
· the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
· that they might be called trees of righteousness,
· the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

A four fold response to the anointing
Verse 4
· And they shall build the old wastes,
· they shall raise up the former desolations,
· and they shall repair the waste cities,
· the desolations of many generations.

A two fold witness reaction
Verse 5
· And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,
· and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.

A four fold heavenly reward
Verse 6
· But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD:
· men shall call you the Ministers of our God:
· ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles,
· and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.

Acts 10:37-38
37 You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached- 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around
· doing good and
· healing all who were under the power of the devil,
· because God was with him.

ANOINTING
ANOINT, ANOINTING

· To authorize, or set apart, a person for a particular work or service (Isa 61:1).
· The anointed person belonged to God in a special sense. The phrases, "the Lord's anointed," "God's anointed," "My anointed," "Your anointed," or "His anointed" are used of Saul (1 Sam 26:9,11), David (2 Sam 22:51), and Solomon (2 Chron 6:42).
· In the New Testament, all who are Christ's disciples are said to be anointed; they are God's very own, set apart and commissioned for service (2 Cor 1:21).
· Priests, kings, and prophets were anointed. Oil was poured on the head of the person being anointed (Ex 29:7). Kings were set apart through the ritual of anointing, which was performed by a prophet who acted in God's power and authority (1 Sam 15:1). The Old Testament also records two instances of the anointing of a prophet (1 Kings 19:16; Isa 61:1).
Jesus the Messiah is described as "anointed." This description is found in the psalms of the Old Testament which prophesy the coming of Christ and in the preaching of the apostle Peter in the Book of Acts.
In the New Testament, anointing was frequently used in connection with healing. The Holy Spirit's activities in a believer's life are pictured in terms associated with anointing. Jesus' disciples anointed the sick (Mark 6:13), and James instructed the elders of the church to anoint the sick with oil (James 5:14). This anointing was for the purpose of healing.

MESSIAH
A. Nouns.
mashiach OT:4899, "anointed one; Messiah." Of the 39 occurrences of mashiach, none occurs in the wisdom literature. They are scattered throughout the rest of biblical literary types and periods.

First, mashiach refers to one who is anointed with oil, symbolizing the reception of the Holy Spirit, enabling him to do an assigned task. Kings 1 Sam 24:6, high priests, and some prophets 1 Kings 19:16 were so anointed: "If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people..." Lev 4:3-- the first biblical appearance. In the case of Cyrus, he was anointed with God's Spirit only and commissioned an "anointed deliverer" of Israel Isa 45:1. The patriarchs, too, are called "anointed ones": "Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm" Ps 105:15.

Second, the word is sometimes transliterated "Messiah." After the promise to David 2 Sam 7:13 mashiach refers immediately to the Davidic dynasty, but ultimately it points to the "Messiah," Jesus the Christ: "The kings of the earth [take their stand], and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord, and against his Anointed..." Ps 2:2. In Dan 9:25 the word is transliterated: "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince...." The New Testament also attests the word in this latter meaning John 1:41. Most frequently in the New Testament the word is translated ("Christ") rather than transliterated ("Messiah"). See also ANOINT.
mishchah OT:4888, "anointment." This noun occurs 21 times and only in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. It always follows the Hebrew word for oil. The first occurrence is Ex 25:6: "Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense."
B. Verb.
mashach OT:4886, "to smear with oil or paint, anoint." This verb, which appears 69 times in biblical Hebrew, has cognates in Ugaritic, Akkadian, Aramaic, and Arabic. The objects of this verb are people, sacrificial victims, and objects of worship. Aaron and his sons are the objects of this verb in Ex 30:30: "And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office."

· The Anointing can come on any one/ whether the vessel be clean or dirty

1 Sam 19:18-20:1
18 So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.

19 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.

20 And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.

21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.

22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.

23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

24 And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?

There are four levels of prophecy
· The Word of God
2 Peter 1:19-21
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

· The Spirit of prophecy
Rev 19:10
10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy."

· The gift of prophecy
1 Cor 13:2
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

· The office of the prophet
Ephesians 4:11
11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
KJV

ANOINT The practice of anointing with perfumed oil was common among the Hebrews.
(1.) The act of anointing was significant of consecration to a holy or sacred use; hence the anointing of the high priest (Exodus 29:29; Leviticus 4:3) and of the sacred vessels (Exodus 30:26). The high priest and the king are thus called "the anointed" (Leviticus 4:3, 5, 16; Leviticus 6:20; Psalm 132:10). Anointing a king was equivalent to crowning him (1 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 2:4, etc.). Prophets were also anointed (1 Kings 19:16; 1 Chron. 16:22; Psalm 105:15). The expression, "anoint the shield" (Isaiah 21:5), refers to the custom of rubbing oil on the leather of the shield so as to make it supple and fit for use in war.
(2.) Anointing was also an act of hospitality (Luke 7:38, 46). It was the custom of the Jews in like manner to anoint themselves with oil, as a means of refreshing or invigorating their bodies (Deut. 28:40; Ruth 3:3; 2 Samuel 14:2; Psalm 104:15, etc.). This custom is continued among the Arabians to the present day.
(3.) Oil was used also for medicinal purposes. It was applied to the sick, and also to wounds (Psalm 109:18; Isaiah 1:6; Mark 6:13; James 5:14).
(4.) The bodies of the dead were sometimes anointed (Mark 14:8; Luke 23:56).
(5.) The promised Deliverer is twice called the "Anointed" or Messiah (Psalm 2:2; Daniel 9:25-26), because he was anointed with the Holy Ghost (Isaiah 61:1), figuratively styled the "oil of gladness" (Psalm 45:7; Hebrews 1:9). Jesus of Nazareth is this anointed One (John 1:41; Acts 9:22; Acts 17:2-3; Acts 18:5, 28), the Messiah of the Old Testament.

Anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them
Ex 28:41
41 And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.

Anoint and ordain Aaron and his sons
Exodus 28:41
41 After you put these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.
NIV

"Take the finest spices
Exodus 30:22-25
The Lord said to Moses, [23] "Take the finest spices: 12 1/2 pounds of powdered myrrh; half as much, that is, 6 1/4 pounds of fragrant cinnamon; 6 1/4 pounds of fragrant cane; [24] 12 1/2 pounds of cassia-all weighed using the standard weight of the holy place-and 4 quarts of olive oil. [25] Have a perfumer make these into a holy oil, a fragrant mixture, used only for anointing. This will be the holy oil used for anointing.

It must never be poured on the bodies of other people
Exodus 30:31-33
"Say to the Israelites, 'For generations to come, this will be my holy oil used only for anointing. [32] It must never be poured on the bodies of other people. Never make any perfumed oil using this formula. It is holy, and you must treat it as holy. [33] Whoever prepares a perfume like this or puts it on anyone who is not a priest must be excluded from the people.' "
